From Class to Career: The Best Apps for Communications Majors

In today’s digital world, being a Communications major means closely working with online and social media platforms. Knowing how to navigate technology is an essential skill in this field. The main focus of the Communication Studies major is the deliverance of a message from one source to another, which now has become the main purpose of the online apps. In this blog post, I'll dive into the top communication apps that have helped me learn and perform my best as a student in this field.

1. LinkedIn: Building Your Professional Brand

If you’re serious about establishing a career in communications, LinkedIn is your best friend. LinkedIn has recently evolved from being a platform for searching jobs to a powerful networking tool where you can build your personal brand, connect with industry experts, and showcase your skills. Think of it like Facebook for professionals—your profile is essentially your digital résumé, and your activity on the platform is a way to demonstrate thought leadership. As a Communications major, I use LinkedIn to enhance my journalism skills, to analyze other professionals working in my field, and to find potential trainings, internships, and jobs to practice those skills in real life.

2. Instagram & Facebook: Mastering Digital Communication and PR

In the communications field, it’s all about delivering the right message in the right way. Instagram and Facebook are perfect for finding "your audience" and trying out different marketing strategies. These platforms offer endless opportunities to engage with your audience in creative ways. Instagram is all about visuals. It is a free tool to showcase your event or idea, to present your product. For me, it's a hands-on way to learn how visuals drive engagement and shape public perception.
Facebook, on the other hand, is great for building communities and promoting events. Facebook is more powerful with ads and groups, which is great if you are concentrating in Public Relations. You’ll stay up-to-date with current trends by observing how brands and influencers craft their messages. This is important to keep evolving and enhancing your skills in the field.

3. YouTube: Learn and Create Like a Pro

Nowadays, graduating with a degree in Communications doesn't mean that you have to find a news studio or a movie production to work at. YouTube is your personal creative studio, where you can showcase your skills without having to search for a certain job. It is especially useful if your concentration is in media production or content creation. Through this app you can learn the full content creation process, from scriptwriting to video editing and marketing. Plus, YouTube is full of "how-to" videos that can teach you nearly any skill, from video editing to graphic design. That’s why I like to call it "YouTube University."
For me, YouTube is not only a platform to showcase my work but also a tool for learning. By analyzing what makes other creators’ videos successful, I can improve my own content. It is great for communications majors as you learn such a broad variety of skills that are essential for our career.

Final Thoughts

As a Communications major, these apps are more than just tools—they are essential platforms that help me build, learn, and grow within my field. LinkedIn helps me build my professional network, Instagram and Facebook refine my PR skills, and YouTube allows me to learn and grow in media production. By mastering these platforms, I’m setting myself up for success in a field where technology and communication are inseparable. If you're in communications, or any field really, consider these apps as your digital toolkit for career growth and development.
